We select the protected area (Protect) from the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA), released by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (Deguignet et al., 2014), as an allocation parameter to indicate the locations where crop production is least likely to take place. Notionally, crop production does not occur within protected areas (such as national parks, wilderness areas, and nature reserves), but in reality it does.
